Salt Lake City, UT—Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles reportedly gave $750 to a man claiming to be a Nigerian prince.

Many church members where shocked by this action, especially given the fact that Nigeria is a democratic republic. Elder Uchtdorf issued the following statement to clarify the misunderstanding:

“You see, someone in my family donated money over the internet to an exiled prince from Nigeria who promised to return $10,000 upon his ascension to the throne. It seemed like a good idea at the time, so this action was taken in my name, by someone in my family who may possibly be me… is it okay to call yourself ‘someone in my family?’ Anyway, I fully support the church’s policy related to church leaders donating to exiled Nigerian princes.”
