Salt Lake City, UT—The newest volume of the Joseph Smith Papers contains a photograph of Joseph Smith holding his salamander. This is both the first picture of the salamander as well as of Joseph Smith himself.
Historical evidence suggests that Joseph Smith was very close to his salamander and took it on daily walks around the Hill Cumorah. Documents also show that the salamander was registered as an emotional support salamander to help alleviate the prophet’s stress from translating the Book of Mormon.
Even Mark Hoffman was surprised as he read the Church’s newest publication from his jail cell in central Utah. Hoffman insists that he did not fabricate the photo and that he believes it is purely authentic.
